Brandon Uttley

In this episode, I interview Brandon Uttley – the author of Podcast Away. He shares he has 2 failed shows that are in the podcast graveyard, and yet he started his third show – dressed in an orange jumpsuit on a large Navy ship. The point is – he STARTED. He asked a big name in podcasting to be his first interview – after the guest said YES – Game on – he had to step up and start his show.

In life, it is about committing to something – declaring and then stepping up when it is time to create what you asked for. I really loved Brandon’s book Podcast Away, because it was the truth, no icing on the realities of starting something and not having it work out the first time. If you are thinking about starting your own show, I highly suggest you go get the book and read it this week! In addition, he is giving away three free chapters to his book at this special link for our listeners below.

“You have to have intention as an entrepreneur or you're just spinning your wheels.” – Heather Havenwood

Starting His Latest Podcast

Brandon has worked on two previous podcasts. The second being a bit more successful than the first. He wanted to try a third and go for broke with a great first guest. Like an icon in podcasting, John Lee Dumas. Brandon crafted an email to John and his girlfriend Kate asking for an interview never thinking in his wildest dreams they would say yes.

“You have to be willing to take a chance to be successful. ” – Brandon Uttley

To his surprise, they said yes. Awesome right? There's a catch. Brandon had not actually created his new podcast.  The interview was within a month and a half and Brandon was scrambling. He had to get the show launched and prepared for the trade show.

The First Interview

Brandon was scheduled to interview his guest at the opening night party of the podcasting conference.  It wasn't on Skype or over the phone, it was live. It was the only fifteen or twenty minutes his guest could arrange for an interview. It just so happens it was on an aircraft carrier in San Diego.

It was loud, it was crazy. There were 3000 attendees on this carrier. There were no corners to duck into for an interview. fortunately, Brandon had the foresight to take some steps in overcoming the obstacles. He got the equipment he needed and he practiced.

“Force yourself to create your package by selling it before you even actually have the package.” – Heather Havenwood
